How to Install Indicators in NinjaTrader 8 (Step by Step)

No indicator is right for everyone — it depends on what you trade and what you already know how to read. But the ones worth keeping share a short list of properties, and the ones you uninstall tend to fail in the same four places. Here’s the checklist, category by category.

Glowing cyan dial with a check mark on a dark grid: installing NinjaTrader 8 indicators

Installing an indicator in NinjaTrader 8 takes about two minutes, and you never need to unzip anything.

This guide covers the whole process: importing the file, adding it to a chart, updating to a new version, and what to do when the import fails. It works for any NinjaScript indicator from any vendor, not just ours.

Before you start

  • NinjaTrader 8, version 8.1 or later. Indicators run in the NinjaTrader 8 desktop platform.
  • The indicator as a .zip file. Keep it exactly as you downloaded it. NinjaTrader imports the .zip directly.

Step 1: Download the .zip

Download the indicator from the vendor. For SweepLogic indicators, it’s under My Account › Downloads on tradethesweep.com.

Don’t unzip it. Some browsers unzip downloads automatically. If you end up with a folder instead of a .zip, download it again and keep the .zip.

Step 2: Import it

  1. In NinjaTrader, open the Control Center.
  2. Go to Tools → Import → NinjaScript Add-On.
  3. Select the .zip and confirm.

NinjaTrader compiles the indicator and confirms the import. That’s the install done.

Step 3: Add it to a chart

  1. Open a chart.
  2. Press Ctrl+I, or right-click the chart and choose Indicators.
  3. Find the indicator in the list and add it.
  4. Set its options and click OK.

Updating to a new version

Remove the old version before you import the new one. Two copies of the same indicator can’t exist side by side, and NinjaTrader will refuse the import.

  1. Remove the old version. Control Center → New → NinjaScript Editor, find the previous version in the Indicators folder and remove it. Or delete its .cs file from Documents\NinjaTrader 8\bin\Custom\Indicators.
  2. Restart NinjaTrader. This step isn’t optional. NinjaTrader keeps compiled code in memory, so a removed file can still be loaded until you restart.
  3. Import the new .zip as in Step 2.

If the import fails

First, check the Log tab in the Control Center. It shows the full error. The pop-up usually doesn’t.

Almost every failure is one of these three:

  • “Duplicate method names.” An older copy of the indicator is still installed. Remove it, restart, and import again. Here’s the full fix for the duplicate method names error.
  • Error 0x8007016A, “The cloud file provider is not running.” Your Documents folder is synced by OneDrive, and NinjaTrader can’t read OneDrive’s placeholder files. Restart OneDrive and set the NinjaTrader 8 folder to “Always keep on this device”. The lasting fix is moving the folder out of OneDrive.
  • The file was made in a newer NinjaTrader. An indicator exported from a newer NinjaTrader build won’t import into an older one. Update NinjaTrader and import again.

Quick answers

Do I unzip the file?
No. NinjaTrader imports the .zip as it is.

Where does NinjaTrader keep imported indicators?
In Documents\NinjaTrader 8\bin\Custom\Indicators.

How do I remove an indicator?
Remove it in the NinjaScript Editor, or delete its .cs file from the folder above. Then restart NinjaTrader.

I imported it, but it’s not in the indicator list. Why?
Check the Log tab for a compile error, then restart NinjaTrader. Some vendors also group their indicators in their own folder in the list.
